2) The range of materials available to artists today is vast. You have chosen to use clay in your work. Why do you use this material? Is there a conceptual basis for this material choice?
I use ceramics for this work because of its dualistic nature. When one thinks of a handmade bowl it seems ‘natural’, or close to the earth in a romanticized way, but the process can actually be far from natural. I insert ceramic honeycomb (an industrially made product, produced to create a catalyst environment for molecular change) into bowl forms to emphasize the rigidity of man made structure. The basic bowl form evokes holding or containing similar to a pollen grain that holds and transports its genetic information with the random possibility of finding a geometric counterpoint or mate. |
