How do you see your ceramic sculpture relating to contemporary
sculptural concerns/dialogues?
I don’t. In part
because I don’t pay much attention to “ceramic or sculptural
concerns” I have found it limiting to the work I would
like to explore, especially when I try to do it consciously.
I think there are similarities between my work and other
artists’ work and I see things pop up in art magazines
all the time that I thought I was working on alone, but
I have found that this ‘competition for ideas’ ultimately
futile and arresting to my work. Maybe my ego is just
too fragile or I just don’t care enough about what others
think to engage in contemporary art dialog. I know that
at times when I have attempted to, I have caught myself
lying to impress my audience and I have heard other artists
do the same. I don’t believe it is intentional, I think
part of it has to do with the limitations of language
in trying to describe the moments in one’s ‘work space’
that go beyond the spoken or written word. |
