I recently had the opportunity to interview Roberts regarding the nature of his work, the process through which he creates a new series, and where he is headed.

Q. How do you choose the materials with which you want to work?
A. First, I formulate a question before
I choose the material. For example, with the "Working
Meditation" series, I played with the idea of the dot
com revolution before creating a meditative act with phonebooks.
Q. What do you most look forward to when working with
a particular piece or a series?
A. The most exciting part
is the initial moment when I form the question that I'm
trying to ask with the work. It's really a matter of
trying to find interesting ways of answering that question.
Also, I enjoy the physical aspects, which are the quiet
times in the studio. For instance, filling in the seams
of the honeycomb ceramic took hours to do and it required
me to be slow and methodical. |
