“Since the geometry of the pollen grain is used by the plant to identify its own species, the results of my manipulation of the pollen grain structure are sure to be biologically sterile, but visually dynamic.”
~~ Gregory Roberts
Roberts came up with the idea for “Wall Pollen” while researching the contents of the air in his backyard. For a three-month period, Roberts sampled and photographed the air near his house. He used light microscopy to photograph images of local pollens and spores from the air samples. The images were then rendered in 3-dimensional sculptures using traditional and honeycomb ceramics. The 30+ sculptures, approx-imately one cubic foot each, culminated in an installation recreating one cubic cent-imeter of San Francisco air blown up 10,000 times its actual size.
