The Thirst Series, concerned with western technological
conformity and its effect on eastern cultures, is based
on water vessels from ancient civilizations. "Soup
Kitchen," founded on ancient Chinese ladles, replicates
the massive tool used to scoop water from rivers or ponds
before it poured the water into another vessel.
By carving the pieces out of honeycomb ceramic, Roberts
introduces a new medium to the art world as well.
This industrial material, originally engineered as a catalytic
converter in cars and smokestacks, conveys the distinct
relationship between art and science. It is also
a means for Roberts to ask if technological advances "necessarily
hold water."
