Trick or Treat expresses genuine concern about the CBU-87/B cluster bombs that the United States Air Force began dropping on Afghani soil shortly after the 9/11 attacks on America. The bombs were intended to be dropped on the so-called Taliban soldiers. However, the majority of the cluster bombs ended up near civilian areas. Some of these bombs failed to detonate on impact leaving hundreds of yellow soda can-like “duds” all around these areas. Shortly after the air raids, the United States also began dropping food packs, which the Afghani people were being encouraged to pick up and consume. Unfortunately, these food packets were also yellow and the Afghani people were not certain if they were gathering food packets or cluster bombs.
Around Halloween, civilian injuries from this confusion were reported. This is why Roberts chose the title “Trick or Treat.” He wanted to express the danger of the yellow cluster bombs and their similarity to the food packets. As Gregory Roberts queries, “Will you be fed or will you be fodder?”
This piece contains 202 casts of Air Yams (Dioscorea bulbifera) representing the number of bomblets found in the CBU-87/B; 101 with black tops (representing bombs) and 101 with plain tops (representing food).
