BIOGRAPHY

Gregory Roberts is a San Francisco based artist who has been exhibiting professionally since 1994.
He is currently an Assistant Professor of Ceramics at Sonoma State University.

Roberts was born in Buffalo, New York in 1968. When he was four years old his family move to a small town in Vermont with a significant cow population. He became interested in ceramics while attending Champlain Valley High School. After receiving a BFA from Alfred University in 1991, he relocated to San Francisco to begin work at Dorothy Weiss Gallery. One year later he was pursuing a Masters of Fine Arts from Mills College. Roberts' Masters of Fine Arts thesis exhibition, Working Late, was then featured in a two man show at Dorothy Weiss Gallery in 1994 as part of the San Francisco Art Dealers Association's, Introductions '94. In the fall 1994, the San Francisco Arts Commission funded his public performance sculpture Trying To Fit In with a Market Street Art in Transit Grant. In this piece, up to 16 temporary workers who were employed to fold the San Francisco Yellow pages into Products of Meditation, while seated at desks located on the sidewalk of downtown Market Street. Since then he has mounted 10 Major exhibitions and participated in over 45 group shows nationally and internationally. Roberts work has been cited in Ceramics Art and Perception, American Craft magazine, Artweek and Ceramics Monthly magazine and has been included in several books on ceramics including the exhibition catalogs; The Artful Teapot, By Garth Clark in 2002.  Jack Larson, Creator and Collector published by Merrill Holberton in 2004. Coordinator of Visiting Artist; Internationally recognized artist Hedi Ernst was a visiting artist in the ceramics area in the fall of 2002 and in the spring of 2003 in preparation for her residency and subsequent installation at the Paradises Ridge Sculpture Garden. In exchange she gave slide lectures throughout the semester and made herself available to all interested students on a drop-in bases.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

2002-03 The Center For Ceramic Arts, Berkeley, CA. Member of the broad of directors, Center for the Ceramic Arts is a new Bay Area organization with the goal of becoming an artist in residence program and exhibition venue to serve the Northern California ceramics community. Activities have included, coordinating the first ever Northern California Ceramic Faculty Summit, which occurred on October 5, 2002

CERAMICS AREA ACTIVITIES / IMPROVEMENTS

2003 Under my direction and thanks to the donation of $75,000, from Deborah Hatfield, BA 2003, to the Art Department, the ceramics area has installed two new Geil Gas fired kilns and a large computed controlled Skutt , Oval electric kiln. This gift has allow students to create work that could not be done with the previous equipment.
In the spring of 2003, developed and offered the new course Kiln Firing Workshop to students with an emphasis in ceramics. This course was offered again in the spring of 2004 after the new kilns were installed and fully operational.
Initiated a student exhibition of ceramic, OUTCAST, attended by students, faculty and guests, held at the end of Spring 2003 in the ceramics studio.
2002 Gifts: Arranged for the donation of a large equipment gift to the Art Department of a computer-controlled kiln from Hedi Ernst.
2001 Curriculum changes; wrote and implemented three new classes for the 2002-2004 SSU Course Catalog, Large Scale Clay and Installation, Form and Function and Ceramic Materials. These courses were added to bring a wider breadth of knowledge to the SSU ceramics students.
